Pick, spade shovel, and that awful thing. We had 6 acres in rural PA and split rail fenced in an acre for the dogs. The posts always needed replacing. Not a ranch but one up on Bloom? Great insights on the holes and barb wire & love the footnote 3 as judge can morph.
Once while digging a post hole, a possum dove into the hole. I looked down at it, it hissed up at me. I opened the jaws of the implement wide, struck downward, and then lifted, opened, and flung in one motion. The critter went bouncing, limp, soundless, over and away from us and our tools. We were on the next hole when the dark mass in the groundcover sprung limbs and a snout and scurried away into the bushes.
