Judge Holden is a counterfeiter -“creating representations,” and McCarthy in his stories also creates representations of the West. My thought or💭 idea is that McCarthy’s stories are worth studying to get a fuller picture of the west then I had before relying on idealized versions of the west presented by Wilder and Hollywood which were more accessible.

Wilder created a picture of the west and the way people acted and dealt with the challenges of nature that became embedded in the culture. The things she emphasized (and the challenges she ignored or washed over) gave a picture of just work hard and we’ll succeed was lighter and idealized but McCarthy acknowledges all the darkness of human nature

Can I poke the bear? Ingalls Wilder is a damn fine counterfeiter who has had more influence on our culture of the “West” because she is more accessible. But you make a fine argument for going through the rocky terrain of McCarthy’s complication.
